If you’ve ever wrestled with a new language, you know it can feel like climbing a mountain, especially as an adult. However, it’s crucial to master the art of being a beginner, and for me, that journey led to Spain.

My Spanish adventures started at a young age, as my family frequently spoke the language. While I could understand the conversations swirling around me, participating was a different story. Classes in elementary school, though helpful, didn’t quite prepare me for the nuances of speaking. In college, I studied Spanish more seriously, focusing on reading, writing, and analyzing texts. Yet, with only a fraction of conversational practice, fluency remained elusive.
Rediscovering Spanish: What Worked and What Didn’t
Fast forward to a few years ago, I decided to give speaking Spanish another shot. It wasn't merely for personal fulfillment—I wanted to engage with friends and clients who spoke Spanish and truly connect with them. With that goal in mind, my learning methods evolved.
One of the first steps I took was to experiment with language apps. My experience with Duolingo and Babbel left much to be desired. While they provided some vocabulary and matching exercises, they fell short in offering the grammatical depth necessary for real-world conversations. So I embarked on a mission to find alternatives that resonate better with how adults learn.

Instead of apps, I immersed myself in real conversations. Interacting with native speakers was invaluable—each mistake became a stepping stone toward improvement. Group meetups with other language enthusiasts and conversation exchanges opened new doors. These interactions were filled with laughter, miscommunications, and corrections that helped me grow.
